Comment:

Though they’re enormously influential and endlessly imitated, the Band were a collection of unique, quirky talents who came together for a sound that no one but those five individuals could reproduce. With three powerful voices — bassist Rick Danko’s unearthly quaver, drummer Levon Helm’s Southern twang, and pianist Richard Manuel’s soulful moan — alongside Garth Hudson’s ethereal organ, Robbie Robertson’s tough, bluesy guitar licks, and the whole group’s multi-instrumental gifts, they boasted a mighty arsenal. Their roots-rocking tunes blended everything from hillbilly holler to hardwood-floor honky-tonk and beyond, pointing the way towards the earthy singer-songwriter sounds of the ’70s and creating a batch of beloved classic-rock standards. We’ve crammed a career’s worth of the Band’s ballads, barn-burners, and backyard boogie-woogie into one convenient spot right here, so start digging in.
