Comment:

A couple of weeks ago the mix of the week was a tape entirely made up of last songs on albums. European Son was on it, but I can't remember any of the rest. I've always thought a good opener was more important. If you listen to CDs, then it'll be the track you hear most often, because you'll hear it every time you put it on. A good opener can also set the tone for an album in a way that even a classic last track (Desolation Row, for example) can't do. Things like hearing Oasis sing 'it's good to be back' as they were turning into the biggest thing in Britain. Taxman highlighting the new grown up Beatles (whingeing about money rather than singing about girls). Travis' All I Wanna Do Is Rock, after which their entire career has been downhill. I think my favourite opening track, though, is 'Kenneth', in the way that it basically states that the mandolin has gone out of the window and the band are doing what they do best. It made sense that they opened with it on the tour. The title is from the World Party song - 'the best lack all conviction, while the worst is yet to come'. It seemed the most appropriate.
