Comment:
Lets take the word "pop" which once upon a time simply meant "music that appealed to the masses, i.e. popular music." Now the word conjurs up terms like "pre-pubescent," "pre-fabricated," "lightweight" and um, "boybands." In other words, pretty much "artistically vacant." So, what do bands who play the kind of music that was well, "pop" back in the sixties and seventies, call their music? POWER POP! Power pop is crunchy, hummable, songs with soaring choruses, constructed around at least three chords with a killer hook, that get the pulse racing and make you want to drive around with the top down. So what does power pop mean?. First, it describes a genre of music heavily influenced by bands such as The Beatles, where the power of guitars, bass and drums are harnessed by strong melody and countermelody, as well as vocal harmonies. The songs usually deal with boy meets girl, boy looses girl, boy wonders why he even wanted girl to begin with, but in reality that is just a mask for something bigger that reveals itself with time. Second, it describes the sound of a band or a song. Lets take Pete Townshend, who first referred to The Who as power pop and thus coined the term. If you had to describe the way The Who sounds or sounded, no one would argue that they fail or failed to sound powerful in a 3 minute pop format. Third, it describes a look, whether it be skinny ties and matching suits from the '60s or late '70s, an overall geeky appearance, or various eyewear made famous by the likes of Brian Wilson, John Lennon or Chris White of The Zombies. The irony is the power pop sound has always been present but never actually popular except during the heyday of its forefathers-(the Beatles, Byrds, Beach Boys, The Who, etc). Yes, there have been minor explosions of the pop gun here and there but for the most part it has been left in the underground holster. The tape looks at Power Pop from the post Beatles era on.Feedback:
I LOVE THIS. I WANT THIS. (You should NOT be surprised.)
swwwwwwwweeeeet!
I do NOT want to knock the rock snob encyclopedia. Its breadth and depth bypasses most mortal mix tapes (or series thereof). But I must ask, why no Weezer? Too popular? Or do I misunderstand power pop? Either way...a fantastic mix. -Humbly, DJ U.
As with many of the entries in the Encyclopedia, time factors prevent inclusions of many an artist. Yes DJ Usurp, Weezer fits into the catagory.
It's good -- I like it -- but why no Who? No Small Faces? No Kinks? Those bands literally invented the genre.
Just a random comment from a '60's rock snob....;)

Scratch that, I just read the explanation. :)
The Spongetones, Holy Cow, man. I thought I was the only one who knew of them. Actually they have sort of resurfaced lately. Jaime Hoover still does shows in Charlotte and he runs a recording studio.
oh yeah, are you refering the the Wanderlust from Atlanta featuring Kevin Watford on drums?
No, Wanderlust was Philadelphia based group that was comprised of Scot Sax-lead vocals, guitar(now living in LA, solo artist and in Bachelor Number One); Rob Bonfiglio-Vocals, lead guitar(now in Blush and achieving notoriety as Carnie Wilson's husband; Mark Levin-bass(now in LA in Bachelor Number One); Jim Cavanaugh-drums
Once again you have shown your superior music knowledge. Their was a band in Atl. called Wanderlust that was sort of a Teenage Fanclub kind of thing. The drummer is in a new band called Gonzalez that absolutely rock in a Man's Ruins kind of way. He is absolutely the best drummer I have ever seen play.
I jsut read this mix again. It is soooo good!
Papa Luvz Ya!
Awesome mix....but no Undertones?? Songs like "Teenage Kicks" and "Get over You" practically define power pop.
I agree, time constraints again
Casetta: I read this today and completely love it. Shoes and Spongetones?! Marshall Crenshaw and the Rubinoos? My favorite Dwight Twilley song....You just plain rock.
I SHOULD SUBMIT MY TAPE OF 'NOT FADE AWAY' BY BUDDY HOLLY ON REPEAT! ;)
I think this Rock Snob encyclopedia business has got to be one of the coolest things ever put to tape. This is simply stunning.
