Comment:
This is something I put together to prepare for the Playboy Jazz Festival, which was held a few weeks ago at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. All of these artists (and a few others like Toshi Reagon, Keely Smith, etc.) were featured this year. Reviewing it for my newspaper the past 16 years, I long ago came to grips with the notion that not all of the jazz is traditional, good, or even jazz. But it's a great event -- two days (18 hours total) of sun, music, a revolving stage to eliminate dead time between acts, emcee Bill Cosby, and the Bowl's no-rule policy of what you can and can't bring ... basically everything's OK but bonfires and 40-gallon beer kegs (they block the aisles). The festival started in 1959 in Chicago when Playboy magazine decided to celebrate jazz. The fest went quiet for 20 years, was resurrected in 1979 in L.A., where it's been held yearly ever since. And yes Hef comes ... this year he was there with 6 of his 7 girlfriends. The poster (soon to appear) below is from the 1959 festival.
Feedback:
Looks like it was a cool bill. The Chicago Jazz fest is like that too. You've got to wade through the neo-swing & jazz-lite to get to the gems like Zorn or the Arkestra. How was Femi Kuti live? I'm going to a fest he's headlining next weekend. Being a massive Fela fan, I don't want to set myself up for a let down by getting too hyped. A Nigerian woman at work told me he has some risque dancers, which may be interesting because I'm taking my 5 year old son along with me.
Femi was actually pretty good live. He had a huge band (all colorfully dressed) and did a lot of stuff from his 2000 album "Shoki Shoki," which was a pretty good recording. As for the dancers, they weren't that risque ... they wear these sort of hula-looking costumes but they don't disrobe or anything ... it should be kid-safe ... have a good time ...
Thanks man. You know, I want to be sure I'm a *good* dad & not put my interests first. Cool poster. Can't quite make out all the names, but it looks like it was a "whooping" bill.
