Comment:

The ballad of Mott the Hoople ended in 1976, nearly a year after front man Ian Hunter abandoned ship. But during their prime they toured the world and sang about it, documenting their thrilling journey and eventual decline in a combustible combination of preening strut, exhilarating excess, and ballsy rock. Although associated forever with glam, the band's way with raw, muscular rock and melodic beauty proved too tough to die. Their influence trickled into punk both musically (it's hard to imagine the Clash had Mick Ralphs never picked up a guitar) and lyrically (Ian Hunter's Dylan-esque cynicism inspired future generations of firebrand front men). Ian himself remains unstoppable, rocking into his 68th year with Shrunken Heads (2007), proving that the "The Golden Age of Rock 'n' Roll" knows no bounds.
