Comment:

Like the title says... The Beautiful Maladies is proabaly the best place to start for an introduction to this songwriting genius with a sandpaper larynx... This mix, in my opinion, would make a great follow-up: A smattering of his early work, a few essentials that I couldn't believe the first one missed (Train Song and I'll Shoot the Moon for example), and a handful from his the Grammy-winning Bone Machine and Mule Variations... I also threw in a version of his lovely early-period ballad Take Me Home sung by Canadian singer/songwriter Holly Cole (from her fine all-Tom-Waits-covers album Temptation)... If it seems like I all but ignored the albums Swordfishtrombones and Rain Dogs, it's because A) They're so essential they should be heard in their entirity, and B) Well, um, I didn't actually HAVE either of those albums handy when I made this mix... It's still a solid compilation.

A solid compilation it is. You couldn't pick a much better subject for a single artist mix. Good job, and don't ever forget the image of Tom Waits as Rennfield in "Bram Stoker's Dracula"
