Comment:

What is Roxy Music? It could be a number of things: the glam-era madness of the British group's first albums, recorded with one Brian Eno wreaking havok on then-new sythesizers and tape machines; the artful, deconstructed love songs delivered by singer Bryan Ferry; the farewell windswept synthpop with too much meloncholy panache to be considered a sell-out; or maybe it is just the keen fashion sense and scantily clad models splayed across their album covers. In an age when so much alleged cutting edge music veers between re-creation and self-conscious theatrics, the overflowing, double fisted cocktails of Roxy's first albums (Roxy Music and For Your Pleasure)sounded strange in its day and still sound quite strange now. Musique conrete, doo-wop, cabaret, crooner pop and The Velvet Underground are treated as equals. Eno left( or was pushed out)after the second album constrained by the role as sideman. Ferry made himself over from glam-rock greaser to tuxedo clad charmer. His halting, gulping vibrato gave his musings on unrequited love an electric shock. He was being campy and sincere. He did it all with style. By the time of the groups last album, Avalon, the irony had vanished. " Re-Make/Re-Model" derived it's edge from ambiguity: was the song about a girl or a car? There is no question regarding Avalon's "To Turn You On". Every now and then, someone prominent will come out as a complete raving Roxy Music-ite (most recently Moby and Air). Arguably, any band trying on the "noise-pop" suit owes a huge debt to the band even if they are not aware of it. Aside from Roxy selctions, the tape features solo effort works of the three core members. F.Y.I. Eno is featured in both Mackay and Manzanera's solo tracks.

Nothing wrong with "More Than This" or "Pajamara", just gotta pick and choose when you do these kinds of mixes as you are well aware of. By no means is the lack of a track represented meant as a critical slight.
