It was around 1994-95 that I became a Stephin Merritt fan, and two years after I realized he had become my favorite songwriter of all time... The attention and acclaim he earned with '69 Love Songs' is both well-deserved and long overdue... This is a decent introduction, containing most of my personal favorite Stephin Merritt tracks, but it's anything but comprehensive; I included songs from all of the TMF full-lengths (plus an essential non-album track I Don't Believe You) and side projects (the 6ths and Future Bible Heroes), but nothing from the EP's (TMF: House of Tomorrow, FBH: I'm Lonely and I Love It and Lonely Days, Gothic Archies: The New Despair)... I know many say this, but truly, it's hard to make a definitive single-disc best-of for an artist with so much great material (I'll probably make a Volume 2 eventually). I would call this a decent introduction - nothing more. A final note: All songs are sung by Stephin Merritt, except where noted above (the first 2 TMF albums, both 6ths albums, and a third of 69 Love Songs feature other vocalists, And I wanted to give credit where it was due).
