Comment:
Another in a series of warm, rich, distinctively moving vocalist mixes: Joe Pernice. Although my bias for the Scud Mountain Boys' "Massachusetts" album shines through here with a whopping 8 cuts representing it, I tried to be fair about my track selection. The only album not represented is the "Big Tobacco" solo record, simply because nothing on it appeals to me more than any of these songs. However, these are the tunes that it REALLY hurt to cut: "Peter Graves' Anatomy" (Scud Mt. Boys), "Chicken Wire" and "7:30" (Pernice Brothers), "Theme to an Endless Bummer" (Chappaquiddick Skyline) and "Prince Valium" (Big Tobacco).Feedback:
This looks cool. I would like a copy. Would you care to trade?
I have already had crystalized the moment which will define this summer for me in the future, and that is driving along a rural road, farms on all sides of me, listening to "Crestfallen." This looks like a wonderful tape. Joe Pernice is amazing.
Oh, sorry for the delay in my response, Martin... yeah, I'll trade with you. Just let me check out your stuff to see what I'd like from you.
I would have the hardest time making a Pernice tape. It really _hurts_ to cut anything. Nice-o mix.. My soft spot would be Massachusetts too.
I don't think I noticed this one before. As perfect as one would expect a Joe Pernice mix to be. I have to say I would have liked to see their cover (Scud Mt. Boys , that is) of "Witchita Lineman"...just phenomenal. Again though, what can you do? So many worthy songs. Well done.
I love that cover, too, Adam. But as you said, what can you do? He's done so much quality stuff over the past ten or so years...
Why would you attempt to condense Pernice's work into a single CD, and then weight it so heavily toward a single album, however wonderful the album Massachusetts may be? That just seems to violate an unwritten rule of compiling....
I've just made my own 1-CD comp for Scud Mountain Boys (which includes all of your selections except "Kneivel"), as well as a 2-CD comp of post-Scud work (Pernice Bros. and all Joe's alter ego projects), though there is of course a lot more of this material to work with now (Feb. 2007)than when you made your comp. Even in distilling the essence of Pernice into 3 CDs, I had to make some hard choices, esp. for the Scud comp.
You don't happen to own any recordings by The Scuds, the band which morphed into Scud Mountain Boys?
