Comment:
the thing that's always hooked me on the music coming out of new zealand since 1980 is the seamless comingling of punk, pop, noise, drone and art with nary an ounce of 'art for art's sake' pretentiousness or missing a beat. if you would care to argue 'bad politics' not being two of the most exposed, irreverent minutes of personal torment, or "baseheart" not being one of the saddest songs in the world, "pink frost" not one of the most harrowing, birchville cat motel's drone not the most terrifying sound of the gates of hell swalling the world whole, plagal grind's "blackout", without uttering a word, not pulling the strings every american lo-fi indie rock band since the dawn of its tortured artist hipness wishes it could conjure, or, "the deadly tango" not being just one of the best damn songs ever...well, i'd just think you were wrong. a long overdue trade to someone i was arrogantly trying to convince of the above. the proof is in the pudding, methinks.Feedback:
one cool mix here. my fascination with the NZ sound has been ongoing for years. i suppose there's only room for a small number of artists, but there are so many other cool ones too--Tall Dwarves and Crude come to mind too. Birchville Cat Motel! Wow. I might be emailing about a trade if you are interested.
Great mix.
this is simply astonishing...both the clean (especially 'getting older', fuck, WHAT a song!) and the 3D's are fantastic, yet criminally-unheard-of(well, in the states at least) bands...this is just wonderful, man.
After my own heart re: choice of Terminals and Plagal Grind cuts. Tried to appreciate The Terminals on album and failed. I think they were a singles band. I'd kill for a copy of the full Plagal Grind EP, 'stead of just the two songs you get on Making Losers Happy.
I am definatedly intrested in doing a trade. Email me!
A great mix. I cherish the two Flying Nun compilation CDs I own (Getting Older and I'm In Love With These Times) which includes some of the above artists. One of my greatest finds to this day was getting the Look Blue Go Purple import CD at the swap meet for two bucks! I would have paid ten times that much!
All I can say is.... WOW!
hiya lakespeed, me again (fraew)... pretty nice kiwi mix, and featuring a couple of tracks i haven't heard!, could you give me a buzz with some info on plagal grind, flies inside the sun, dadamah and queen meanie puss?, i haven't heard of these guys at all!
