Comment:
The originators of what is generically known as the "No Depression"/alt-country movement (I understand its origins in ancient Appalachian music, Hank Williams, '70s country-rock via Gram Parsons/Poco, and the Paisley Underground, but I'm talking about its modern incarnation). This mix was inspired by the fact that my roommate is moving out tomorrow, along with his Uncle Tupelo CDs... so I seized the opportunity to dub this with the originals and not my CDRs. I'd been thinking about this mix for awhile, but hadn't gotten around to it. As is obvious from my track selection, I think Jeff Tweedy is far superior to Jay Farrar... so shoot me. :-) Favorite tunes are: "New Madrid", "Acuff-Rose", "Graveyard Shift", and "If That's Alright".Feedback:
Well Rob, we all know you are wrong about Jay Farrar, but this is an excellent collection. I think my favorite off this mix is "Give Back the Key to My Heart" because it's got that great line "You've got a friend in cocaine." Shit. Now I gotta get my hands on more Uncle Tupelo stuff!
Well, that's a great line, Brandt, but I hope you're not embracing the sentiment. ;-) And I am most certainly NOT wrong about that pretentious, be-flanneled, circa-'69-Neil-Young-coiffed, anti-social bastard Mr. Farrar. :-)
Tweedy, man. Farrar's albums are so. Fucking. BORING. But, you know, vive la difference. Brandt, if you're gonna go whole hog looking for UT stuff, I recommend trying to find the "Gun" 7". It's got a fabulous cover of "I Wanna Destroy You" on the flip.
Of course that great song("Give Back the Key to My Heart") was written by the late Doug Sahm of Sir Douglas Quintet fame.
AND it features Doug Sahm on co-lead vocals (stealing the show from Jay the Lame-o).

it's refreshing to find other tupelo fans who double as jay-haters. WHERE can I get a copy of this????? its amazing.

How did I miss this when it was first posted? Nice collection. I was going to put together my own Uncle Tupelo disc for a co-worker, but I might just steal this whole lineup.
