Comment:

The one knock on me when I was a dj at WBGU was that I was too poppy. My friends at the station could not believe that I could do two hours of pure unadulterated pop week in and week out. But lest anyone think I am a one trick pony (musically speaking of course--other elements of my life are so banal that it would turn your hair white) I present this. Inspired by recent conversations with Rob Conroy and lo-fi jr. as well as my recent purchase of the Nuggets II box, I think this tape is a departure for what I have become known for in this forum. I also think it is the best tape I have made in quite some time. Maybe I am starting to break out of my rut after all.

Wow, Brandt. This looks great. :-) Esp props to my favorite previously undiscovered (by me) tune on Nuggets II... "Baby, Your Phrasing is Bad" (although I technically knew the Crystalized Movements cover) and my favorite Nuggets II tune, period, "Father's Name Was Dad" (which I paid megabucks for to own prior to the box). The transitions that particularly appealed to me here were the VU/Cat Stevens combo (I can hear it perfectly in my head and it's beautiful) and your very inspired choice of Magnetic Fields/Johnny Cash (I've been waiting for SOMONE to do that for a long time). Nice job. Send this to me...

Wow, Crystalized Movements did a cove of Baby, Your Phasing Is Bad? I gave Scott of that band a tape with odd sixties cuts back in 1988. Hmmm, where are my thanks??

Another great mix Mr. Fundak! Believe it or not, I put the Mojo Men song on the tape I'm currently making for you. What are the odds of that?! Barbara Manning and the underrated (and unfortunately named) Vomit Launch were great choices too.

Yeah, Casetta, they did. It's on some Twisted Village comp from the early '90s... I forget the name at the moment, but I'll get back to you via e-mail when I get a chance.
