Comment:

Okay. This mix is born from two sources... one, I promised Talia that I'd make her a mix that went through my favorite bands (in order of preference) and featured my favorite song from each, no matter how "obvious" the choice... and two, my band (the Donut People) just finished re-recording a song from our first album that so thoroughly kicked the proverbial ass of the original (and so thoroughly outdid everything we've ever done) that I wanted to see how it fared in this unbelievably esteemed company (hence the navel-gazing alluded to in the title). Well, all I can say with regard to the latter is that I am not embarrassed to have our song on this disc, although I obviously love everything else on the disc more (and how can ANYTHING stand up next to "Paperback Writer"?) So anyway, there are a couple of picks here that aren't QUITE accurate (my favorite songs by Gram Parsons and Syd Barrett are technically by the Flying Burrito Brothers and Pink Floyd, respectively, but I wanted to be anal), but they're close. And it's amazing to hear how well these songs blend together, despite the fact that they are juxtaposed oddly on paper and the fact that no attempt whatsoever was made to make the transitions cohesive. Also, I decided to not include artists that veer too far from the pop/rock genre (hence the absence of Coltrane, Hank Williams, Miles Davis, and Chet Baker, all of whom were originally slated for the disc) because there is simply no comparison between them and my band (see purpose #2 for making this "mix"). And although this mix was designed for Talia, I'll be sending it out to most folks that I've traded with.

You know, i always try to explain to people who think I am a pretentious indierocker why I prefer stuff that is unheard by many to the stuff that everyone knows, and inevitably I get accused of listening to stuff just because no one else listens to it (which is patently not true--there is tons of stuff out there that remains unheard for good reason.) This is not to say, however, that really great stuff has not made it to the top. That's why some of the "obvious" choices make perfect sense on this mix--Paperback Writer and God Only Knows are brilliant, without question. These donut people on the other hand... ;)

Yes, I get the same comments. I was accused of being too snobbish for Target! Never mind their ridicoulsly overpriced (main reason I don't shop in mainstream stores) Every song here is excellent, from Big Star to Husker Du to the Beatles.

I have thought about a mix like this but it is impossible for me to rank my faves. I just can't do it. Nice stuff btw.

We could debate endlessly over fave tracks by these bands, but there's no denying the unfathomable greatness of the artists chosen (no Scott Walker or Tim Buckley though?). Putting your own band on here & then segueing into the Beatles has to take balls the size of church bells clappers. Nice job!

Journey Through the Past!! Those two 'lost' albums (hidden is probably a better word) are fantastic. How did you get it onto CD? Can you burn from vinyl, or do you have one of those semi-bootleg re-issues? Anyway, good choice. I probably would have picked Yonder Stands the Sinner, but that whole 'compare and contrast' thing is what makes a mix like this so interesting.
