                                Teena Marie
Comment:
The story is famous: barely past 20, young Mary Christine Brockert, aka Teena Marie, released her 1977 debut album on Motown, yet, fearful that soul fans might balk at a non-black artist, the label didn’t include a photo of Marie on the cover. It didn’t need to worry; by the time fans and programmers discovered that this sweet new star was carved from white chocolate, they’d already fallen hard for the fresh yet potent, entirely authentic sounds of songs like “Déjà Vu (I’ve Been Here Before).” Over the decades, Marie only strengthened her claim to R&B immortality — from her hit-strewn ’80s heyday (witness the stone-cold dance extravaganza “Square Biz”), to the enduring brilliance of her 21st-century sounds (dig the slinky groove of “Makavelli Never Lied”), to her too-soon 2010 passing, the Ivory Queen of Soul stayed true to her muse, and became one of music’s all-time Essentials.
