Comment:

i think i've said it here before, but there's bands that are merely xerox machines and ones that pilfer, steal and lift with style. for me, the swirlies definately fell firmly into the latter category. from their beginnings as startlingly-skilled MBV-style pedal-steppers, they then took a sharp left into a thrilling murk of tape-loop-trickery and sonic mayhem. you can just hear it in the songs...it feels fuckin' GOOD to send the needles into the red, dammit! they were probably second only to the beatnik filmstars as being fantastically adept at packing an unbelivable amount of noise into a 3-minute pop tune...hiss, static, found sounds, squawks, buzzes, squeaks and splats just seemed to bubble out of every corner...and as with most noise-based bands i like the most, they tempered the squall and scree with killer pop-sense; if a song can get me both wincing in aural pain AND bobbing my head frantically, i'm sold.

I bought a swirlies record back in 92 or 3 and I loved it. However at the same time I was flooded by the likes of The Flamming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Swervedriver. Unfortunately The Swirlies got sort of lost in the shuffle. I will definitely being reconstructing my Swirlies connection. Thanks for the reminder.

'blonder tongue audio baton' + the 'what to do about me' ep i literally abused to the point where i knew every backwards-looped VU meter pushing guitar fill. never could get into any of their stuff beyond those two...a consequence of them being perhaps the most inept, disappointing live show i've ever experienced, i don't doubt. but i'm digressing. fine job.

Man, Dave... nice job. I got a record of theirs on cassette (I forget which one, I think it was the debut) back in '91 or '92 and all but forgot about them... now I'm intrigued.

sometimes the swirlies are the best band ever.
