Comment:
My best of John Lennon, in and out of the Beatles. Yes, there are tons of great songs left out, but it's just one disc, and many close decisions came down to space and personal taste. Sure, I'm probably sparse on the solo Lennon, but he _was_ better with the Beatles; I've included the exceptions to that rule.Feedback:
No Julia, the plaintive ode to his mother? Or Day Tripper? All in all very nice mix. Solo Lennon music is really good, tho.
With a musical career like Lennon's it's hard to fit it all on one disc or cassette. So I'm not sore at all if you left out some songs I'd have put on or that would be obvious to include. But I never saw it as Beatle John and Plastic Ono John. Or Beatle Paul and Wings Paul. Can't really decipher their solo stuff because after Revolver it seemed they were already solo artists but they were just in the same band. If the Beatles kept on going instead of breaking up, all the wings and plastic ono songs would have been Beatles songs, I believe. Sorry for the ramblings...Lovely mix, man.
Just to set things straight, I do like solo Lennon stuff, and I'm not saying that his style suddenly changed completely, either. I just think that his songs benefited from the occasional idea from other group members and the tight interplay of 4 guys who'd been playing together for 10+ years. I see the Beatles as a rudder for all involved, and a bit of drift (admittedly punctuated by some fine recordings) occurred after the breakup.
Me, I think it's excellent.
This is a cool mix, Michael. FYI, though (not that this destroys its inclusion on your tape): "In My Life" is very much a 50-50 Lennon/McCartney collaboration.
This Mix makes me happy.
Hmm...my box-set booklet called "In My Life" pretty purely Lennon.
Happiness is a warm gun. How true, how true.
