Comment:

The latest in my ongoing series of criminally ignored bands features the exceptionally tuneful L.A. trash popsters on this disc... Jeff McDonald has one of my favorite voices of all-time and a fine knack for pop hooks, and the band were one of the most rockin' live ensembles that I've ever seen. It's a shame that they broke up without a shred of recognition, commercially OR critically, really. There are a ton of tunes that I'd like to include here: "Kill Someone You Hate", "Linda Blair" or the track that would have been the title track to the disc from the first album; "Deuce" and "Citadel" from Teen Babes; "Frosted Flake", "Janus, Jeanie and George Harrison" and "Love is You" from Neurotica; "Shonen Knife", "1976", "Debbie & Kim" and "Elephant Flares" from Third Eye; "Any Hour, Every Day" from 2500 Redd Kross Fans Can't Be Wrong; and "Mess Around" and "Get Out of Myself" from Show World.

I have always enjoyed the brother's McDonalds output. Their intentional combo of "low art" pop culture aesthetics with great power pop hooks made a Redd Kross album worth seeking out. Nothing from thier Yoko Ono inspired side band The Tater-Totz? You gotta love a band that does a version of "Give Peace a Chance" as if it is really "We Will Rock You" complete with the bombastic Brian May guitar riffage.

Oh, I would have loved to have put Tater Totz songs on this, but alas, I only have those albums on vinyl...

Anyone who loves Redd Kross must immediately rent "Spirit of '76". The McDonald brothers star in the comedy, which also features Leif Garrett, David Cassidy, Olivia D'Abo and Rob Reiner.

Does this mean the VH-1 luminaries series is over? Damn, I've been waiting for a Billy Joel single artist mix from you.

i LOVE this band-it's a shame "teenage babes" is OOP. just one more example of how overlooked they are. :(
