Comment:
This is my second jazz single artist mix submission (after Miles Davis)... I don't claim to have any great knowledge about the genre - I just started adding jazz CD's to my collection maybe a year and a half ago - admittedly I have much to learn (and many CD's to buy if I'm to have even a fair collection of classic jazz)... Everything here is from CM's regular CD releases with three exceptions: The first track "Smooch" was taken from a Miles Davis collection with writing credits for both (but just listen to the thing: it's clearly a simply arranged "Weird Nightmare" with Miles playing the main melody on trumpet - I don't think the few horn embellishments entitle him to a co-writing credit, but that's just me)... The final two tracks are from Hal Wilner's Mingus tribute album (recorded 13 years after the man's death)... I wish I could have included more selections but many of the more acclaimed compositions run around the 10-minute mark (Pithecanthropus Erectus, Shoes of the Fisherman's Wife...). I regret not including any of the songs he recorded with Duke Ellington (Caravan, Wig Wise...), but there's always next time... The cover is a James Fee photograph titled 'Hands'Feedback:
We very much need more mixes like this. Thank you. Great artwork, too.
Mingus mix, impressive! Thanks!
Beautiful, Infrared. Seriously. In a way, it helps to not have a TON of Mingus stuff (or of any specific jazz artist) when doing a single-artist comp, as it does help to narrow the scope of the thing.
