Comment:
Art-damaged noisemeisters with killer de-tuned pop hooks... legendary, but fading (somewhat) in my humble opinion. Although I had just about all of the Sonic Youth discography at my disposal, I must say that I don't like any songs on the albums that I omitted more than these songs from these seven releases: Confusion is Sex, Bad Moon Rising, EVOL, Sister (my favorite), Daydream Nation (my second-favorite), Goo and Dirty. The second volume will be posted in a moment and will feature these songs (among others) that I wish were on this disc, but had to be cut due to time limitations: "I Love Her All the Time", "Pacific Coast Highway", "Cotton Crown", "The Sprawl", "Kissability", and "Theresa's Sound World." By the way, I suppose it's obvious from this song list that I have a vaguely anti-Kim bias... oh well...Feedback:
funny how SY always seems to stir raging different opinions of their "best" stuff...i would say ignoring "experimental jet set..." and "a thousand leaves" omits their best stuff after "daydream nation", but then, again, i think everything they did up until at least "sister" was just art-wank garbage, and i can't even listen to "goo" anymore without cringing. nice job with these, nonetheless.
Sonic Youth has kind of gone downhill lately, but I thought their series of noise LPs were pretty good. Great mix.
Both of these mixes look great, Rob! It does seem that the Youth bring out vastly different opinions in people, though. These two mixes cover all the best stuff they did prior to Experimental Jet Set, but some of their finest moments are left out I think. I'll agree that their last album was not that great, but the series of EPs they are releasing under SYR are incredible: noise experiments, sound collage, straigt up beautiful instrumentals, and guitar interpretations of classic compositions. I guess that could all be construed as pretentious wanker stuff, but I feel that at least they continue to explore new territories in sound. It sort of seems as if they are coming full circle, having begun to learn under Glenn Branca and now returning to those style compositions in some of their works. I think "Diamond Sea," although maybe too long for a mix, is one of the best songs they've done. I would probably say my least favorites are "Goo" (never have liked it really) and the "NYC Ghosts and Glowers." It will be incredibly difficult for me to narrow down selections for a mix. Perhaps I'll try :) At any rate, both of these discs are exceptionally well done, even if we disagree about the band's recent output.
Great mix !!
