New Rock Revealed: Roots & Influences
Comment:
Chalk it up to the omnipresent single "Woman," a Deep Purple-vintage beast of molten metal if there ever was one. Or maybe it's payback for a make-you-believe-in-rock-all-over-again performance at this year's SXSW Fest. Either way, Aussie power-trio Wolfmother is rock 'n' roll's gift of '06, having just unleashed a two-ton long-player of '70s-sized heaviness — raging riffage, Viking cries . . . flute solos, white unicorns, and all. Being that the band draws from a buffet of classic-rock sources, we decided we'd put together a playlist that goes song-for-song with their album: For every Wolfmother track that shook us right down to the dawn of hard rock, we picked a track that was there at the time. Our picks reflect just some of their many influences; if you like what you hear, we heartily encourage you to listen further . . . and, naturally, continue drinking from the serpent's vine.
