Comment:
I know what you're thinking, and I want to state up front that every song here dates from the Peter Gabriel era. Somehow, despite the uniform quality (barring the occasional overlong keyboard solo) of this period, this disc must fall under my "guilty pleasures" series, as Genesis under the tutelage of one of Satan's helpers (a.k.a. one Phil Collins, previously known as a quality drummer before the '80s sucked him in) became literally one of THE WORST BANDS EVER. "Invisible Touch", anyone? *shivers* "Illegal Alien"? *gags* At any rate, this is most certainly not one of my most ambitious, outstanding creations... these are my favorite Genesis songs, assembled within an hour of conversing with Samantha (who will be the lucky recipient of this thing and who inspired the whole enterprise), to provide her with a primer on this period. Apparently her dad was recommending them, and I was happy to share what I have from their catalog. I hope she enjoys it.Feedback:
Rob, although Genesis are not one of my fave bands, I do like one or two songs on here, including "the lamb...", and I say "good on ya" for indulging in a guilty pleasure! I'm sure Samantha will enjoy!
Just for clarification, they're not one of my favorite bands, either, Sue. :-) I have a few of their CDs, but that places them somewhere in the top 100-150 or so. heh
While I've heard very little by Genesis from this period, I do have to applaud your efforts. Thank you for excluding anything by the vile monster that cursed the world with "Sussudio".
Well, Francesca, Satan Spawn is singing "More Fool Me", so he's featured... but I included that track to illustrate just how far he plummeted in such a short time ("More Fool Me" is a beautiful acoustic pop tune).
A TRICK OF THE TAIL is one of my favourite albums of all time. I do not recall ever hearing any tunes from the Gabriel era. Would I be pleased or disappointed if I were to hear this collection?
"A Trick of the Tail" isn't bad, in my opinion, but this stuff is better by far, I think... so I doubt you'd be disappointed. Let me know if you'd like a copy.
Being the age I am, I was exposed to quite a bit of the "prog rock" era via radio and step-brothers record collections. Most of it doesn't hold up that well.(I am sure in the near future "hipsters" will be digging into this era scammering for the likes of Budgie records. God bless 'em.) I know I have Foxtrot, Selling England By The Pound and Lamb Lies Down in the vinyl vault but can't tell you the last time I dug that out to listen to.
I'm with you on the prog-rock thing in general, Casetta, but I'll take a fall for both this period of Genesis and most '70s King Crimson. In my case, most of my exposure to prog rock (which was very, very extensive) came from an uncle of mine who has several years on you--he was always playing me early Genesis albums and King Crimson records, along with a ton of Jethro Tull (whom I defend to a slight degree) and Yes albums (whom I loathe), and other assorted stuff... So I guess a lot of my fondness for this type of thing is sentimental, even though it's not ENTIRELY so.
Would I be killed for loving "Discipline" by King Crimson?
No way, I love King Crimson... mostly the 70's stuff, but the Belew period is okay, too. heh
