Comment:

One of the least likely and most fun collaborations in indie-rock history: Calvin Johnson (Beat Happening vocalist & K Records founder) and Doug Martsch (Built to Spill member and indie rock guitar god) have made three albums together as the Halo Benders... Both participants seem to be enjoying themselves immensely, and its amusing to hear Calvin try to focus his musical abilities (Dub Narcotic Sound System is more random and chaotic... here's where he puts his more structured songs) while conversely Martsch gets to relax and loosen up more than he does on any of his BTS albums. Calvin's vocals are still an acquired taste, and sometimes a throwaway vibe gets the better of some songs, but when the all the elements click, the results are joyous: goofy and glorious indie-pop... This mix chronologically compiles the lion's share of all three albums (God Don't Make No Junk, Don't Tell Me Now, and The Rebels Not In), but none of the b-sides (they do an amusing version of the Smiths' "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want" but it wears thin after repeated listens)... The cover's a photoshop-blurred version of Andy Warhol's 'Vesuvius'

this is fabulous. i can never seem to make a benders mix without "halo bender" on it & I think on a tip is one of the best indie rock songs ever recorded in the northwest.
