"For Your Love" was the Yardbirds' continental divide. Written by future 10CC frontman Graham Gouldman, its glimmering pop-craft pushed blues-devoted Eric Clapton to exit. But with its modal shifts and haunting tone it blazed the way for some of the band's (and the '60s') most adventurous hits: the Middle Eastern-tinged "Heart Full Of Soul," "Over, Under, Sideways, Down," and the psychedelic landmark "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago," with Jeff Beck touching the outer limits of feedback and distortion. They didn't abandon the blues — with rave-ups like the frantic coda of "I'm a Man" they redefined its parameters.
