Comment:
Look, there’s nothing wrong with one-hit wonders. Take 1991, for instance. Top 40 stations were full of flawless cameos back then — records worth revisiting no matter how you look at it, including the slo-mo electro of “One More Try,” the heart-sinking new age hooks of “Sadeness, Pt. I,” and the swiftly spliced samples of “Pop Goes the Weasel,” a certified jam that references the Who, Stevie Wonder, and Peter Gabriel. And then there’s the brightly lit dance beats of “Touch Me (All Night Long),” a revved-up reminder of what Cathy Dennis did before she decided to churn out instant classics for other artists (Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue, Katy Perry).
