Drive-By Truckers
Comment:
If you listen to enough Drive-By Truckers platters, it becomes readily apparent that these Georgia peaches could write feel-good, Southern-fried jams like “The Buford Stick,” “Greenville to Baton Rouge,” and “The Southern Thing” in their sleep. Another thing you’ll notice: just how different their discs sound — this despite sticking to a dusty palette of scruffy riffs and lonesome-cowboy chords. “When the Pin Hits the Shell” and “72 (This Highway’s Mean)” lean more toward the band’s tear-in-my-beer country side than on red-blooded rock ’n’ roll, “Nobody Knows You When You’re Down and Out” links singer Jason Isbell with the Preservation Hall Jazz Band in delectable Dixieland despair, and “Goodbye” serves up a side of Americana-tinged nostalgia with a twang-y finish.
