Comment:

From their very beginnings more than a decade ago, Drive-By Truckers have chosen to embrace, explain, and debunk Southern rock stereotypes rather than turn their bucket hats the other way. On a superficial level, that’s meant song and album titles that play right into our preconceptions, like Gangstabilly and “Carl Perkins’ Cadillac,” “That Man I Shot” and The Dirty South. But a quick listen reveals something much deeper, including loner balladry with a bite (“Heathens”), an unflinching wedding day disaster (“My Sweet Annette”), a swampy fuzz-fest that owes as much to the Stones as Skynyrd (“3 Dimes Down”), and a 9-to-5 anthem that’ll leave you tearing down your cubicle walls (“Hell No, I Ain’t Happy”).
