Somewhere in between Cuba Gooding, Jr. shouting “Show me the money!” at Tom Cruise in Jerry Maguire and the police clapping the cuffs on the Unabomber, there was a lot of great music made in 1996. One thing’s for sure, the ladies came on strong, with Mariah, Alanis, Jewel, and plenty more scoring stadium-size smashes. Although, as 2Pac, Seal, and Beck can tell you, the guys weren’t exactly slacking off either. The fact is that whether you wanted to skank to No Doubt’s ska/punk/pop confection “Just a Girl” or jump into the pit to the strains of Rage Against the Machine’s menacing mix of metal and rap on “Bulls On Parade,” 1996 had something just for you. So do we, in fact — the essential sounds of the year, all sewn up into one big, booming bundle.
