Things aren't always as simple as they seem. Such is the case with Bruce Springsteen's first album of songs by other writers. While [i]We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions[/i] might look like a quickie covers LP, one listen reveals that he has carefully chosen the perfect songs, the perfect musicians, and, above all, the perfect time to breathe fire and headline-news relevance back into these old folk standards. Taking Bruce's lead, our list of earlier recordings of those songs could easily have been a collection of the Pete Seeger versions that first inspired Springsteen; instead we decided to dig deeper and look for other early versions we felt best captured the joy, pain, and spirit of these songs.
