Comment:
So the story of this mix is: I lived in the backwoods of Massachusetts, listening to my classic rock radio without a care in the world. "Feel Like Makin' Love" by Bad Company was my favorite song ever. When I started school, I got all my favorite songs off of Napster and prepared to live in music-cheapskate bliss. But it was not to be. Apparently, in New York City, Crosby, Stills & Nash just doesn't cut it. I was the laughingstock of the hip little coffee bar in which I hung out. So, with my affection for the Velvet Underground as a starting point, I combed Art of the Mix for music that I actually liked but which didn't make all the black-clad hipsters snort their lattes out of their noses in scorn. I was infinitely successful. Now, I am cooler than cooler than cool. When someone mentions their love of Radiohead or Weezer, I just roll my eyes. They're SO mainstream. I love being a music snob. Frankly, I have no idea whether or not this music is cool or not, but with a few exceptions, nobody's ever heard of it, and that's the point. There's a hell of a lot of completely obscure good music out there, and it sure is fun to listen to. But to tell you the truth, I'll always be a fan of "Love the One You're With", no matter what anybody says. The End.Feedback:
Yeah! This is awesome: Jeff Buckley, Big Star, Magnetic Fields, Rufus, Billy Bragg, Belle & Sebastian...Nice work! Oh, and definately hold onto the Crosby, Stills & Nash love--they rock! CSN&Y's 4 Way Street is one of my favorite CDs.
yum manics and a little jeff buckly sounds nice
Hey, there's nothing revolutionary here (and I know you're aware of that), but the more important point is that you've got a phenomenal start here with Big Star, the Magnetics, Rufus, TFC, Billy Bragg, Sleater-Kinney, the Faces and B & S...
Some good stuff on here. And listen to lucy - there's nothin wrong w/"love the one yr with"
Yay, feedback! This is so much fun. So now I have a question since it looks like people out there are actually looking at this. Where does all this newfangled indie music come from? What are its roots? Velvet Underground, sure, and Big Star, too, maybe, but what else? What CDs do you all own that were made before 1975? If I could merge my classic rock love with some music snobbery, that would be the coolest thing ever. Ok, I'm done now. But if you give me enough suggestions to make a good mix out of, I'll post it here and credit you. eternal gratitude and fame, what could be better? email is good, too, kr214@barnard.edu

dammit, i really didn't submit that twice.
It's all just Rawk n'Roll. It all comes from the same place, and it is important to know from where it came.
now, now. don't make fun of the music snobs - 95% of us may be dodobirds, but we aren't all the black turtleneck coffee-thru-the-nose-snorters yr sarcastically taunting. besides, honestly, nothing here *is* better than "feel like makin' love". live irony free.
breeders, sugarcubes, buckley, sleater-kinney, rentals, teenage fanclub, rufus wainwright, the faces, the velvet underground, and belle & sebastion are all SO mainstream. if you're going to take such pride in your musical snobiness, be better at it.
hehe...keep the meanness comin' - it's all i deserve, though in my own defense, i've only been a music snob for three days now. i'm relying on you all for inspiration and guidance. I mean, last week, my definition of "mainstream" was TRL, so you gotta give me SOME credit...
Kristen, one of the best places to look, if you haven't already, is the All Music Guide , where if you type in the name of a band, you can get a "music map" of it's origins. It's pretty cool, I use it a lot. And by the way, you can delete mistakes you made (& others) on your mixes, like the extra feedback, by going into "my art of the mix" & clicking on "edit your mixes" (or something like that.) Oh, and the feedback you got by the person who didn't think these bands were obscure enough, don't worry about that, you'll always get people like that, just don't let it bother you (which I'm sure you don't). & 1 more thing (this is the last of it!) bands mentioned by said person, to most people (like most of the population) there's no way they're ever gonna know who sleater-kinney or belle & sebastian or the like are.
