Comment:
Reams of copy have been written about The Velvet Underground's impact on music. Briefly here is the scoop. The band was formed when Pickwick staff songwriter Lou Reed hooked up with John Cale, who was part of minimalist composer LaMonte Young's combo--The Dream Syndicate. Lou brings his old pal Sterling Morrison on board and Cale invites beatnik drummer Angus MacLise and call themselves first, The Warlocks, then The Falling Spikes before settling on the name, The Velvet Underground, after old Dream Syndicate buddy Tony Conrad finds a trashy novel of the same name. Angus leaves because he thinks art should not be for sale and performing for money violates his ethics. Maureen Tucker comes on board in his place. The LaMonte Young connection has them noticed in the Andy Warhol circle and under his guidance they are teamed with German ice princess, Nico in his Exploding Plastic Inevitable Media Show, which was a multi-media psychedelic show, staged in New York in 1966. They release a debut record, which went against the grain the tangerine sunshine sound that was popular at the time. The record failed to make a popular impact. Warhol lost interest after the first album and pulled his financial support and the band was free of Nico as well. The resulting second album was a decibel happy fuck-you sonic assault. The record failed to make a popular impact. Soon after it's release, Cale departed the group. He is replaced with Doug Yule. Their equipment is stolen and a "quiet" 180-degree change resulted in the third record. The band's repeated changes in style had left their audience way behind and this album failed to make a popular impact. Mid-1969 saw them without a record contract, but in 1970 they recorded Loaded, generally regarded as a dynamic rock'n'roll album. Unfortunately, Reed quit a month before its release, when the band, benefiting from a renewed wave of public interest, appeared on the brink of achieving commercial success. Cale and Reed later achieved the success that eluded them with The Velvets, through a series of solo albums. Nico also released three solo albums with assistance from Cale before emigrating to Paris in 1971. In retrospect, The Velvets' first album, with its harsh loud music and its lyrical obsession with decadence, was probably the most significant album of this era in that it previewed the aggressive punk sounds to emerge in the late seventies.
Feedback:
Holy crap, this is wonderful! Both tapes are!
I think somehow my initial comment on here got wiped out (or perhaps I was distracted by my friends that were here last night and didn't enter it), so here it is again: Another great double-whammy of an addition to the Rock Snob series.
Both of these tapes are amazing. Very cool that you included the Dream Syndicate stuff as well. Have you heard the Maclise solo albums or Cale's new one, Sun Blindness Music? Stunning double set, Casetta. Bravo!
I can't wait to get my grubby hands on these. Woo-hoo! You've out-done yourself here Tom!
Awesome. Great history lesson too.
an obvious choice for V, but the right choice. thanks for blowing me away again.
wonderful, wonderful!!!! You timed this one nicely too. With the emerging great white heat hyped Strokes release.
The tape succeeded in making a popular impact...on me, at least. Cheers.
i love this mix. they're one of my favorite bands of all time.
