Comment:
0:00 is the length listed on the record label for "There's a Riot Goin' On". This isn't exactly a theme mix, but the only other vaguely applicable choice (Rhythm and Blues), seemed even less appropriate. There is a certain thematic progression through the tape though, which can be easily summed up by the juxtaposition of "Thank You (falletinme be mice elf agin)" with "Thank You for Talkin' to me Africa". A glorious wave of musical expression that broke too soon and then rolled back, to paraphraphrase Hunter S. Thompson. Based on the sequencing I guess you could accuse me of being a pessimist. Right now I don't know if I'd argue against that. Incidentally, my record collection is pretty slight as regards this particular time and place in musical history (hence the Bobby Womack selection, which comes from the obvious source). Something I need to remedy soon. Still, I think I got the general feeling of the times across.Feedback:
very nice
Wow. GReat idea and one uber-soulful, kick-ass mix. Add to my pile, please, Mr. Handfulls.
Theme de Yo Yo --> yeah!! Great mix!
great mix. great mix. There's a Riot Goin' On is one of my fav. records as well...
i hate when i find places where my collection is threadbare. i want to make a country mix but i just don't have enough to pull it off...this is great though, threadbare or not.
If you say this mix is from a threadbare area of your household & then use one of the Art Ensembles rarest/wildest sides, I'd love to dive into areas you think you're flush! Very cool mix. Indded, Sly Stone's catalog is so crying out for a remastered boxset treatment. Rhino Records! Please show CBS how it's done!
Okay, maybe I was using false modesty as a form of left-handed braggadocio (hope I spelled that right). I did use pretty much every early 70's funk/soul record I have though. Glad to see some comments about the Art Ensemble track. I'm not overly familiar with their eouvre, but from what I've heard Yo Yo is definitely one of their finest moments. too bad they didn't follow the sly stone/free jazz angle a bit more. A whole album with Fontella Bass likely would compete with "Riot" in my estimation. And yeah lo-fi, I agree, the current state of Sly's catalog (especially "Riot) is tragic indeed.
