Comment:
I wanted to pay small tribute to some of those artists that meant something to me who had died in some kind of tragic way. I tried to use tracks that were in some way meaningful. I also loosely grouped the artists together by method of death. The Doves song is simply a good lead off track, kind of a tribute in it's own way. Acetone, Richie Lee the most recent rock and roll suicide, a sad track when looking at what happened. Del Shannon, a tortured soul if there ever was one, this track was from his come-back album that ended up being released posthumously after he killed himself. Interesting that most of his songs were about being left or heart broken, but in this one he was the one leaving. Nirvana, not much else to be said. Danny Gatton, one of the great under-appreciated guitar players who couldn't handle life, he shot himself as well. Joy Division, Ian Curtis, another who couldn't handle the pressures of looming fame and hung himself. Roy Buchanan, very similar career wise to Danny Gatton (what a double bill they would have been!) had major drug and alcohol problems and finally hung himself in his jail cell after being arrested for public drunkeness. INXS, Michael Hutchence...would have been to easy to use Suicide Blonde, I always looked at them as a fun band and wanted to use a song that caught some of their spirit. Jeff Buckley, much has been written, so many of his songs hinted at death and drowning. The Dukes of Hang-Gliding track is actually in a way what started me on this mix. I read a review of the album and it said how the Drowning track was supposedly meant to capture what it felt like to drown. One thing lead to another and here's the mix. Allman Brothers, Duane Allman and Berry Oakley dying within a year of each other in motorcycle wrecks, so sad. T.Rex, Mark Bolan, dying in a car wreck, "Life's a gas, I hope it's gonna last". Otis Redding, the man...tragically lost in a plane crash. Lynyrd Skynyrd, Ronnie Van Zandt, Steve & Cassie Gaines, others during the years since the plane crash have died tragically as well. Ronnie was in my opinion one of the really under-rated songwriters. Stevie Ray Vaughan...so sad to have been taken after cleaning up his life. Blind Melon...Shannon Hoon, od'd on Heroin...sad waste of a talented life. Nick Drake, reams have been written already, od'd on sleeping pills. Jimi Hendrix...this song is kind of chilling, while also being fun..."give or take, you've only got 200 days." he died very soon after 200 days had passed from recording it. Sam Cooke, shot in a seedy motel while trying to find his girl. "Another Saturday night and I ain't got nobody". Life imitates art sometimes doesn't it? John Lennon....what else is there to say? I chose this song because I love it so much...just him enjoying his life out of the spotlight. And finally Marvin Gaye...shot by his own father...so so sad...and a fitting way to end with a prayer...for the lost souls of rock and roll.I know I've "missed" a few...by choice...so many others I could have used but these are the ones that mean something to ME. So go ahead and make your own version to honour those that mean more to you.
Janis Joplin, Badfinger, Sublime, Brian Jones, Keith Moon, John Bonham, Mama Cass, Jim Morrison....the list is endless.

Feedback:
oooh, aahh, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, T.Rex, John Lennon, Nick Drake ;) all good to see. what does Doves sound like?
Nice tribute.
the Doves song is kind of an weird airy hymnal dirge...if that makes any sense whatsoever!
INXS???
Yeah...remember Michael Hutchence hanging himself?
joy division.
but of course.
