The punk movement of the late '70s was a breath of pure oxygen, wedging itself between the bloated self-importance of progressive rock and the mindless inanity of disco. The Brits' take on it came from a more passionate place, while Americans tended to adopt the fashion without the politics attached. Just listen to the fury implicit in the Clash's "London Calling," compare it with the Ramones' sunnier "Blitzkrieg Bop," and that'll tell you all you need to know.
