Comment:

this is digital (1101). i have been listening to a lot of music with "twang" lately (that and the smiths...go figure.) anyway, i felt i had enough to go ahead and put together a "country" mix. there are some glaring omissions (like the mekons/sally timms for one) so if anyone has any suggestions for things i should be listening to, go for it.

Great mix, Brandt. But I've gotta ask... "One After 909" = "country?! *scratches head in bewilderment*

it's kind of like a carl perkins number...the whole point of this mix was to kind of fuck with the country aesthetic...maybe it was a bad call, as i was flip flopping between one after 909, two of us and act naturally. i had also intended to put woody guthrie on this mix, as i am having a hard time discerning good country music from good folk music, but i ran out of space.

This is a nice mix of twangy and not-so-twangy songs. Things you should be listening too? Well, there's lots of great old-school country artists (Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, George Jones, etc.) and I really like the Texas singer-songwriters like Townes Van Zandt, Joe Ely, and Jimmie Dale Gilmore.

"One After 909" is clearly an ode to Carl Perkins and "Act Naturally" is a great Bakersfield country, Buck Ownes cover that The Beatles tapped into.

My point, though, Messrs. Casetta & Fundak, is that neither Carl Perkins nor the Beatles' interpretation of his style were "country". "Act Naturally", on the other hand, is. Another very noteworthy Beatles country tune is "I Don't Want to Spoil the Party".

but what is "country" then? by your reasoning i should probably remove the magnetic fields, geraldine fibbers and the pixies for sure then, right?

No, they clearly doing more of a "genre exercise" deal than the Beatles were. "The One After 909" is a straight-up '50s-style ROCK AND ROLL song...

but isn't 50s ROCK the bastard child of blues and country? that's the way i've always seen it...

As I walked down the street to the place I work around 9am this morning, a stray thought crossed my mind. The thought was generally this: "how many turds must a man walk around before you can call him a man?"

Looks good no matter what genre "one after 909" fits into.

Right. Then, with your point in mind, Brandt, *all* rock and roll is the bastard child, and everything rock and roll is "country". Gimme a break... lol.
