Comment:

Inspired last week by the posting of similar sounding stuff, I decided to take my own stab at it. My criteria?? Songs between '78 to '84 with that special FEEL to them. I did my best not to make it overly goth-y (or death rock or death punk as it was called at the time - Goth is a catch-all phrase that popped up in the '90s, kids). What I found is that I had more than enough for two tapes so you may see part two sometime soon. Let me know what you think...

Actually goth is a catch-all phrase that started to stick sometime around 1983/84, having been in limited use for four or five years prior to that. But yes, this is good stuff. Anything that kicks off with "The Light Pours Out Of Me" is not to be argued with. Bring on volume 2.

While I would see it more as a "response" and not a "retort", Jacob, it's a damn fine mix. :) Good PiL and Duran Duran choices, especially.

Well, it doesn't really matter what decade the term "goth" became fashionable, cos either way, this is a great mix.

Actually, just for a small bit of "strange but true" trivia, Ian Astbury actually coined the term "goth." It was a reference to followers of Sex Gang Children. I didn't know this until recently. There's a few articles on it...I'll have to track them down.

Let me clarify that last bit by saying he coined it as a term referencing followers of a particular genre of music. Alright, I'm done now. No, really.

Hey, I am glad to stand corrected if it makes me a smarter individual. Just a little more trivia on the darker genre names, Monte Cazza coined the term "Industrial" with "Industrial Music for Industrial People". This became the name of Throbbing Gristle's record label and soon all music that sounded similar to the music on their label was referred to as "Industrial". This is despite the fact that NIN or Nitzer Ebb sound little like TG...

Which explains why NIN and Nitzer Ebb are so god-awful. Anyway, great mix. Especially with uber-old Ministry and Fad Gadget. Thank god it's not just another New Wave singles mix.
