Syd Barrett
Comment:
They say that those who burn twice as bright burn half as long, and Roger Keith “Syd” Barrett fit that description perfectly. His recording career was limited to four albums — two with Pink Floyd and two solo platters — plus a few loosely collected odds and ends. But the shadow he cast over Pink Floyd has remained for more than 40 years, and two of the band’s best songs, “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” and “Wish You Were Here,” both acknowledge Barrett’s contributions years after he departed. Sadly, bad chemistry, both from without and within, made it impossible for Barrett to work . . . and to work with. He retreated to his mother’s home in 1970, becoming a virtual recluse. Here, we offer a taste of his talent with absurd, whimsical, tripped-out early Floyd cuts (“See Emily Play,” “Bike”) and solo standouts, including 1969 single “Octopus.”
