Comment:
Yet another in my "criminally underrated" series of single-artist comps. These innovative, second-wave British popsters started their career with a string of singles and a debut album that remain absolute classics to this day... following those releases with three albums that steadily diminished in artistic worth... rebounding with the stellar one-two punch of the "Tonight" and "California Man" singles before careening into the beast that was/is Electric Light Orchestra (who, I hate to admit, actually have a couple/few classic singles of their own). I am seriously troubled by the fact that "Down on the Bay" had to be eliminated from this comp, but the damned machine won't write the disc if it's included, despite the fact that it's only reading 5:58 (and not 6 minutes) overtime. Go figure.Feedback:
Another band I don't know much about, sorry to say. Although I know a whole lot more about ELO, as I married a rabid fan of there's (but I still love him anyway!)
Roy Wood was sadly left off my Eccentrics mix(ahh but a sequel must follow )and his work with The Move is some of my favorite, Shazam and Message From The Country are first-rate. Do you have the tracks from the live EP from the Marquee, where they whip thru some wild versions of songs by The Byrds,Moby Grape and Love?
Oh yeah, and that's great stuff. I even have some bonus tracks that were previously unreleased from that live thing, plus the BBC sessions CD. However, as I love their originals so much (and still couldn't fit everything I wanted), I didn't even consider the live tracks or studio covers for inclusion on the mix.
Oh, I wasn't discrediting this mix by any means. I was just curious from a fans perspective. I concur with The Move as on of those overlooked bands of yore. The Jeff Lynne led beast that ELO became has prevented folks from mining the gold of The Move. Of course in like 4 months they will be the retro-band dejour and name dropped endlessly, neo-hipsters will scramble for the reissues. A tire company will usurp "Walk On The Water" to market their new radials. Shazam will join the Nick Drake Fruit Tree Box Set along side The Beach Boys Holland where they are rescued from the land of forgotten records.
I knew you weren't discrediting the mix, Tom, and always, always, always appreciate your comments and input. I was responding also from a fan's perspective, while taking the time to add something there that I meant to include in my "comment" section.
Ok, Rob, just let me know what you want in return. I asked my husband if he knew the Move & he didn't - so I'm sure he'd be interested in hearing them.
