It's easy to forget the pioneering work of neo-soul's chiseled forefather, D'Angelo, seeing as he's been a relatively quiet presence in recent years due to run-ins with the law. One listen to this starter set of songs will change that, however. Everything from [i]Brown Sugar[/i] is considered classic in circles that favor smooth [i]and[/i] sharp R&B, from the punchy drums of the title track to the scrolling film-score strings of the Smokey Robinson cover "Cruisin'." Elsewhere, D'Angelo applies his self-assured singing to the boom-bap breaks of DJ Premier ("Devil's Pie") and the tickling chords of guitarist Charlie Hunter ("Spanish Joint").
