Comment:

While northern Indian classical music is something of an acquired taste, the joys of approaching it as you would a chant and allowing it to flow around and through you are manifold. For openers, it's worth listening to Ravi Shankar's spoken "An Introduction to Indian Music." Ali Akbar Khan, whose "Raag Khamaj" is featured here, is considered a "National Living Treasure" in India. He was cited by the late violin virtuoso Yehudi Menuhin as being "the greatest musician in the world." India has also seen many world-renowned maestros who have pioneered new instruments - like shehnai wizard Bismillah Khan, santoor magician Shivkumar Sharma, flute masters Pannalal Ghosh and Hariprasad Chaurasia, guitar guru Brijbhushan Kabra, etc.
