Comment:
Between the psychedelic journeys and the synthesizer swirls, it’s possible to forget that Steve Miller cut his teeth as an apprentice blues guitarist in Chicago. But no matter how far afield he traveled, he always kept one foot firmly planted in the blues. Even amid the heady horizons of 1968’s Sailor, he found room to sharpen his shuffle, with a faithful take on Jimmy Reed’s “You’re So Fine.” All the way into 2010, Miller was still holding tight to the blues tradition, with a rough-edged, roadhouse-ready cover of B.B. King’s “Rock Me Baby.” Of course, he worked up some worthy blues tunes of his own, too, like the guitar-and-harmonica spotlight “Sweet Maree,” with Chicago legend James Cotton blowing his lungs out on the latter axe.
