Comment:

This is the foundation for a mix I'm considering with the theme of "Banned Music." These are the actual 15 songs that the PMRC held up before America as the "worst of the worst". These are the songs, to borrow from Carlin, that would "infect your soul, curve your spine, and keep the country from winning the war." The PMRC, for those too young to remember, was a group of (almost entirely) U.S. senator's wives--including the would-be first lady, Tipper Gore--who were so deeply offended at the immoral nature of pop & rock music that, in 1985, they sought to enact legislation requiring a "ratings system" to warn parents of the sexual, drug-related, and/or satanic content in their kiddie's music. Given their connections, they very nearly got their wishes. The "compromise" was that ever-so-attractive "Parental Advisory" sticker that has since become something of a "seal of quality" for new music. The PMRC still exists, in one form or another, and they're still not satisfied with the recording industry's attempts at self-regulation. Be vigilant, people.

I remember those days well...especially when Dee Snider of TS had to speak in court and shocked everyone by not being a drooling maniac!

Was it Prince's "Darling Nikki" or Cyndi Lauper's "She Bop" that got Tipper Gore all in a frenzy? I remember reading somewhere that her daughter was listening to a particular song, and Tipper was of course shocked and dismayed by it. I think it had to do with masturbation, so maybe it was "She Bop." (Cyndi RULES!)

If memory serves, it was "Darling Nikki" that got Tipper all exorcised. Geoff, remember also the others who testified that day: Frank Zappa (who was especially brilliant), and JOHN DENVER (!). Al gore, ever the politician, began his statements to all of them (Dee, Frank, and John) with "Mr._____, let me just say that I have been a fan of your music for many years--revealing either extremely broad taste in music, or a serious credibility problem. Ah, those were the days! If space permits, I'd like to conclude this mix with Zappa's "Porn Wars", which features audio from those hearings (including, I believe it's Tipper, reading all her favorite offensive lyrics Shatner style).

HELL YES!! Censorship is one thing I despise more than anything else. It was darling Nikki that got Tipper all worked up because I remember seeing the clip on VH1 of her on the Today show reading the lyrics. Not to get into politics but I generally like Al as a person, but I could NOT vote for him due to a vision of him between Tipper and Joe Lieberman (who is also big on Censorship of everything from video games to music to movies to...). Depending on what the scope is as far as the years covered you can extend that to today (Nirvana having to change Rape me to Waif Me for Walmart, K-mart, for example..)
Great mix!!

Sweet, and you're my age! :)
Yeah, I was getting into Dead Kennedys and getting politically aware at the time, and I was following the PMRC thing from the get-go. I'm really surprised nobody tried putting these together before! Nicely done. Remember, kids, they claimed that the peace symbol was an inverted cross with broken arms! If that doesn't give you a hint as to how misguided they were, nothing will.

I'd like to thank the academy...No, wait. Seriously, though, thanks for the honor. Now I'll have to finish this project.

*Great* mix. You should give a nod to Ice-T whose album was the first to ever have a warning label on it (I don't remember which album specifically). I have all these bookplates signed by Tipper Gore from when I used to work at a huge bookstore (sometimes authors sign them for the bookstores to give to people who missed a signing). I used to put them in with mixes I sent out as a kind of ironic bonus, since most of my mixes contain at least one PMRC-disapproved song. I'll send you some. Email me with your address. You can send them out to all of the many people who will want a copy of this mix (myself included).

Where's the FZ or DK?

Why no FZ or DK? For Frank's part, as he notes in his "Real Frank Zappa Book", the PMRC never targeted any of his stuff. Ironic, because he's way bolder than the likes of, say, Cyndi Lauper. As these tracks are the foundation for what is quickly becoming a much larger project, I'll probably include some Zappa ("Porn Wars") and DK's. Suggestions, anyone?

DK's? Probably "Too Drunk To Fuck" but all their shit was pretty subversive. Nice idea, by the way!

As a bonus, for your collective amusement, I've included the "suggested" PMRC ratings for the songs listed above. It goes like this: DA for "Drugs & Alcohol", V for "violence", X for "explicit sexual content", and O for "occult". Pretty nifty.

Zappa and Jello would indeed be proud! When I worke at a radio station, I received a promo copy of Nick Cave's"Mrder Ballads" with a sticker quoting Jerry Fallwell saying some to the effect "this album is pornographicly violent and no ne should ever ave to hear it
!"
I am not a fan of most of the bands but think itis a great idea!

Can't forget about 2Live Crew. That album truly was the forbidden fruit. Not necessarily high on quality, but people went to jail over it.

If you're looking for FZ suggestions, he has a 12 minute song called "Porn Wars," released 1 month after his statements at the PMRC hearing. It has samples from the hearing, interjected with 'You dirty little whore! Sex' etc. Highly amusing document.

Great idea for a mix, btw. I'm actually doing a report on this right now :)
