Comment:

Narrative, you say? Indeed, I swear it's true. I saw Sarajean's Trek mixes recently, and it jogged a bit of memory - a collection of relaxation tapes for children that I've had for years. I used to use bits of them on mixes, as the narrator has a very relaxing, almost creepy voice. The most interesting one was "Trip To Magic Mountain," and after transferring it from cassette I set out to build a soundtrack around it. There are no gaps between songs - the narration occurs over and around the song intros and outros. And it's some weird shit, let me tell you. The basic premise is that you imagine a journey to the top of a mountain, guided by your friend Mr. Rabbit. On the top of that mountain, by a lake, Mr. Rabbit teaches you about loving yourself & others, mood swings and accepting criticism from adults. Good stuff. Every song is thematically tied to something going on in the story (except the first two, which are mood-setting tracks, as there is no story yet). Some work frighteningly well - as the snare drum intro to "White Rabbit" rolls in, Mr. Rabbit is telling you that at the top of the mountain, "something very special will happen to you" (cue Grace: "one pill makes you larger, and one pill makes you small..."). In fact, at one point you actually imagine yourself "ten feet tall" (cue "King Of Birds"). Anyway, it has to be heard to be believed. I uploaded a sample, with the narration from the first four tracks: http://www.bertha.net/sample.rm (RealAudio), or for those with high-speed, the 5MB mp3 is sample.mp3. As always, if anyone wants a copy, drop me a line.
