Comment:

there is a concept called the "mystery tape". the idea is that you make a tape, you don't label it or make a note of the track list, you throw it under the bed for at least three years and then you take it on a long roadtrip during which it turns out to be an endless source of delight and speculation. there is another way of acquiring mystery tapes. move house a lot. move continent occasionally. and then stumble across a box full of tapes you made more than ten years ago. this is one such tape. and it is without doubt the very best compilation of 1980s independent british pop music known to man. maybe :)

i'm especially tickled by the way side one ends with the rosehips' punker than thou assault on the chesterfields' "ask johnny dee" while the second side opens with the original. some of these tracks are highly obscure, but i recommend all these bands without exception. the wallflowers featured here are from slough, england and have nothing to do with bob dylan's offspring. and the closing track is an intense and shocking live performance from the truly great dan treacy taken from the compilation album "communicate! live at thames polytechnic"

the cover star is my daughter ... with her favourite book

This is lovely. Is the Clouds song the band that featured Jody Phillis? My problem with moving is that I tend to lose things (although not really cds or tapes, however) but more like things like shoes or clothes - I recently moved (well, 16 months ago) from Boston to Perth, and just the other day I was in my garage and I found the shoes I had been looking for since I moved! And I have no idea how they got in the garage in the first place.

sue - thanks for the kind words, but i don't think this is the clouds you're thinking of. these clouds are a scottish band from about 1986, and the song was released on a flexi sold with a fanzine by the people who later went on to run sarah records. as was the baby lemonade song. both sea urchin songs were originally released as flexi-discs too. and the rosehips was only ever available on flexi.

brandt - ditto on the kind words. i'll be happy to swap but it may take a little time. i don't have a working tape deck at the moment apart from the one in the car. i am planning on converting this tape to cd though, so i'll mail you when it's ready. kay?

I know you don't really post anymore, but I just wanted to tell you how great I think this mix is. I can't believe I overlooked it for so long. Any mix that has the Shop Assistants, Talulah Gosh, the Darling Buds and the Rosehips usually doesn't pass by unnoticed by me. Were you able to make a CD copy? I'd be very interested in trading if you have any desire to.
