woman's realm!!!
sorry...
sorry...
Nice. Legal Man I used to hate, but it's sort of grown on me. What I don't like, though, is "centure of elvis" - way too much talking - it was cute the first time I heard it, but not again.
yeah, Legal Man isn't bad...but this mix is a little lacking of the early stuff. and i agree with Sue, why put A Century of Elvis when you could have A Century of Fakers instead...
Hmmm... this is all amusing, I suppose, to a point. And debate is good, part of the fun, etc. Why Century of Elvis? Because I like it. Legal Man? Same thing. Women's Realm? No thanks. Some other things: didn't fit. Thus, here are the 80 minutes I most enjoy of B&S -- which is all that matters to me, of course. (Boy, I can't wait to finish my Oasis mix and have people shitting themselves for lack of Champagne Supernova.)
joe, and obviously what you want is what's important here. but as fellow belle and sebastian fans, i think it's cool to hear what people think "should" and "shouldn't" be on a mix like this...although i may have waited until after the new EP comes out next week to make this...
While it's disturbing to me that I have this much time on my hands, what the hell.... To Rob: Nope, you didn't ask. Nor did *I* ask *you* for feedback on the mix. You felt compelled to comment; same here. Sorry you don't find my mixes more "interesting," but they work for me. And, of course, the question is begged: Why bother commenting on other peoples' mixes if you don't find them interesting? Were you trying to show me the error(s) of my ways? You sweetheart. Now, to Brandt: I tried to suggest earlier that I *do* find it interesting what other people would choose to do the same/differently. I just don't believe that there's any one right way to go about this stuff; it's a time-filler, more than anything. In that way, I don't think there are any songs that "should" or "shouldn't" be on every b&s fan's mix -- it just depends on each individual and their taste(s) at the moment. And yes, I thought about waiting for the new EP, but I wanted to clear the decks of some of these MP3s that have been piling up. Also, I don't know the specifics on this Storytelling soundtrack yet, but color me interested (but not "interesting," eh Rob?). Finally, this could have been much, much worse. You have no idea how close I came to including A Space Boy Dream along w/Century of Elvis. The horror, the horror!
yeah, "spaceboy dream" probably would have gotten you put you in the 9th level of Belle and Sebastian hell! ;) [btw...where did you get info on Storytelling? They said they were doing it and then i haven't heard a thing since...]

Actually, I just read at NME.com a review of the new EP/single (they called it the best since Lazy Painter Jane, hmmm...). They also mentioned that b&s are still working on the Storytelling soundtrack, even though the movie is about to be released. So... no specifics on a release date on the CD as of yet, but at least they still appear to be involved w/the project. I'm just wondering what the instrumentals/songs ratio will look like when all is said and done. Maybe it'll just be 2 hours of variations on Century of Elvis (featuring ukelele, kazoo, and the voice of William Shatner). Ahh, I dare to dream....

way to put Rob in his place...shows you what happens when snippy comments are made about mixes...maybe Rob woke up on the wrong side of the speakers this AM!!
Ah, the Thanksgiving armistace; I feel giddy. My heart bursts with love. But, actually, Rob brings up a valid point that I meant to comment on previously. The reason I post my mixes here is that I love how organized and "complete" they seem when I see them listed in my very own "My Art of the Mix." An anal-retentive's wet-dream, to be sure. Also, it allows me easy searchability for those many times when I'm unsure whether I've already used songs on previous mixes, etc. Finally, every once in a blue moon, somebody contacts me because something catches their eye and that lovely, it's-a-small-world-after-all trading thing can happen -- and thereby introdoce me to music I might not have ever heard otherwise. So, again, my reasons are pretty selfish for listing my things here, but I never really thought of them as "clogging" upo the site with my "endless litany." Surely the site is "big" enough to accomodate my, admittedly, none-too-adventuresome mixes. Well, enough said. And better to let our occasional crankiness(es) (I include myself here) boil over here than, say, go out and shoot presidents. Nearly 40 years to the day since Kennedy's exit, and my father still cries over it. Yikes.
Just a minor quibble about the title : are Belle And Sebastian really all that "twee"? "The Chalet Lines" - a song about rape and violence - is a case in point. Countless other songs, as I'm sure you realise, feature sex, death, loneliness, depression etc. as recurrent themes. Hardly sunshine and lollipops, all told.
Pete - the title is really just a reference to those people who dismiss b&s as purveyors of the dreaded "twee." Shiny, happy. Sunshine, lollipops. All simplifications, of course. So yes, I agree with you -- the lyrics often counter-balance the relatively "sunny" melodies and arrangements. (And Rob -- hey, it was never really a problem. I overreacted as well -- mama bear protecting her mixes and what not. So let the debates ever onward rage. And, more importantly, let the music play (as the diva is wont to say).
