Comment:

Further developments in the music world in '81: female-helmed NYC art-funk (ESG, Tom Tom Club), more ska-style goodness (The Specials, The Police), and perhaps most importantly, hardcore punk. Though the genre was nothing new by '81- the Dead Kennedys (amongst others) were already laying down the foundations for it a year or two previous- this year seemed to be a significant breakthrough for loud-fast-rules punk (T.S.O.L., Minor Threat, Black Flag). It only gets louder, faster and more unruly in '82, though... and man, it'll be weird putting together a mix that prominently features both MDC and Michael Jackson. I think I need a break.

UPDATE, 12-18-02: Stripey's comments were submitted BEFORE I added Human League and Journey. Just so you know.

I remember when "Spirits in the material world" came out - my friend thought the song was called "asparagus in my hot cereal"! (of course I clued her in)

Oh, and don't take too long putting up '82 - these are great! (although I can understand your reluctance re: michael jackson - it's enough to turn anyone's stomach).

Another set of excellent choices. That's one of my favorite Cramps tunes.

LOL nice additions there! Don't Stop Believin' is my fave Journey tune, as well. Not a bad song in the bunch, and great choices all.
