Gram Parsons may have been the godfather of alt-country, but he liked to call his groundbreaking blend of rock and C&W "cosmic American music." Cross-pollinating old-time country traditions — the mournful steel guitar of "Sin City," the Western waltz of "Juanita," the dulcet harmonies of his signature "Hickory Wind" — with the raucous rock ethos of the late '60s and early '70s, Parsons was the first cloud in the oncoming "outlaw country" storm and profoundly shifted the course of rock contemporaries, from the Byrds to the Rolling Stones. In the process, he helped change the way musicians approached American music.
