Comment:

A year I consider one of the best for not just hip-hop (the Beastie Boys' best album; great records by 3rd Bass and Ice-T, and Public Enemy's classic incendiary single- possibly the best rap cut ever)but music in general (Pixies, the Cure, Stone Roses et al). Another case of the end of a decade pointing the way to the course the next is taking- especially regarding the Chili Peppers and Nine Inch Nails, who would go on to much bigger things in the '90s.

UPDATE, 12-18-02: This will probably remain the least-changed of all my mixes in this series, and for good reason.

wow, i keep forgetting that some of my faves are this old. What a great year, though. I'd say '89/'90 was when I began my interest in music. Little did I know it'd eventually be an obsession. Great work. Keep it up.

yes...you even put the best
Beasties song from Pauls Boutique on there.
Fascination Street is an awesome song. Pixies, Pubic Enemy, and UDS were great bands.

this was the year i woke up musically, and over the next few years i would latch on to some of these bands (the pixies, the cure, faith no more...) thanks for reminding me of my roots :)

'Pubic Enemy'? Nah, you're thinking of A Tribe Called Quest. ;) As for 'Three Minute Rule', initially I chose it for time constraints, but I came to realize it's one of the best 'sleeper' tracks on the album due to its sick-ass rhymes and its dub-style production.

PS: Thanks for the feedback, everyone... it's much appreciated. The '90s are coming this weekend...

Jungle Brothers, but no De La Soul? Travesty! ;) Count me among those whose musical obsession really began in this time frame. Can't wait for "my decade!"

Just changing the mix name 'cause I think "I Know You Got Soul" is a more fitting lyric (besides, I screwed it up the first time- It's 'A number/another summer'... dammit). Also: no De La is only a travesty if they aren't gonna be included in '91. And they will be. ;)

Damn you Nate! I am back in senior year at High school with this mix. And my hair is enormous.
Great call with 3rd Bass... I'd forgotten about them, and I wore out a tape of theirs. You really captured the year with this mix. And thanks for not including a single song that was played at my prom. *shudder*

this is by far the best mix to date. i have every artist here with the exception of the mekons. u.d.s. is among my top 5 bands of all time (de la is 2nd) and their new stuff is just as good as the original. p.e., latifah and my fav. beatie album. the cactus album kicks too! steppin' in the best song on there with "soul in the hole" a close 2nd. taste the pain off of the say anything..soundtrack was and is my fav. chili pepper tune. faith no more kicked ass until the bitter end and they split into mr. bungle and started to suck ass. p.e.'s new album is also a winner. latifah has slipped a bit, but that's just 'cause she is an actress now. great mix!
