Comment:

For Ion Moe, who requested some "peppy" music (perhaps I'm misquoting, but that was the gist, anyway). (Yes, I know that I owe Stephanie M., jaime b and Lakespeed new mixes, as well... I promise to get them done/out soon.) So, some background: I haven't had my own computer/burner for over a week, but broke down out of boredom/sheer compulsion last night and used my roommate's burner to put this mix together. I understand that some of these tunes (the Only Ones, Wreckless Eric and ELO spring to mind) have shown up on some of my compatriots' mixes recently, but as *I've* only recently (re-)acquired them on CD, I couldn't resist. Thanks to lo-fi (I always give credit where it's due) for Hot Tuna and Mr. Green's Fleetwood Mac. A final word on Counting Crows: although in some ways Adam Duritz is one of my most-loathed figures in recent music memory, I can't keep myself from thinking that "A Long December" is perhaps one of the best hit singles of the '90s; it really creates a mood and sticks with it. Title, of course, from the Dan Penn-Chips Moman classic that's featured here in its original (and perhaps best) version by James Carr.

a sign of the apocalypse: you and i posting mixes within minutes of each other that feature Fleetwood Mac and Jeff Lynne. scary. (oh, and don't worry about duplicating my recent Buddy Holly selection...i steal ideas from you all the time! :)

Wow... I didn't realize that I had done so (the Buddy Holly thing)... that's my favorite track of his and doing that single-artist comp reminded me that I'd been meaning to put "Well" on a mix for some time... but hey, you can take credit if you'd like. :-) The Fleetwood Mac tune, btw, is from the Peter Green era and is quite a different beast than "Tusk", although I love that Buckingham masterpiece as much as the next pophead.

i was going to say "mixes featuring bands called fleetwood mac" but i thought that would be a bit pretentious or somesuch :)

This looks great Rob. Thanks for bumping Stephanie, Jaime and that Def Leppard worshipper Lakespeed so I could get this first! Actually I said "poppy" but "peppy" suits me just fine.

Thanks, folks. Ion: Well, those other AotMers weren't "bumped", per se... it's just the mix wasn't "mopey" enough for Stephanie, nor was it quite what I had in mind for Lakespeed (although, I must confess, I'm not *quite* sure what I want to do for Lakespeed, hence the delay)... and I made my trade deal with Jaime *after* our trade deal. *gasps for breath*

Lovely, Rob. Did you get the cds in question (at least Wreckless Eric and Only Ones) as single artist ones or the one I suggested? ("diy" teenage kicks uk pop")

Well, Sue, let's just say that my roommate's 20-yr-old girlfriend has a copy of "D.I.Y." on CD... as a result, so do I. ;-)

So you got the cd *very* cheaply, lucky you! But in actuality, so did I - well, relatively, cheap - mine was $5, used, which is pretty cheap, considering what I have to pay for cds now in Aus.

I got turned on to The Only Ones song and the Wreckless Eric Tunes via covers that the Mats did. I know I am a big ole poser, but at least I look cool. It sort of the same way I discovered blues via Led Zeppelin. That is why it is so important to do really good covers.

What kind of procedure do you use to come up with the order of things? This looks very exiting, Rob.
