Comment:
Finally, the 25th year. Looking back on the project, I think I've done more than just refute the original beef I had- of course rock didn't die in 1977. It only got better. The kind of music that fueled Baby Boomer emotions is still around in a mutated strain, but there's a much bigger wealth of styles to be found. While mainstream pop dominates, the alternative (with a lower-case a) is still readily available, a network of enthusiasts in college radio stations and indie webzines concocting a sort of unofficial Billboard. Genres upon sub-genres bridge gaps without blinking- try pinning down the Avalanches or Fantomas or Super Furry Animals or the Beta Band and they'll slip out from under you like a limber luchadore. Rap lyrics are less likely to sound like the Sugarhill Gang's elementary party-rocking and more like an otherworldly blend of Gil-Scott Heron and Rakim- only deeper. An American producer can release an alleged "novelty" album/side project featuring vocalists from California, Britain, Japan and Cuba and parlay it into a Top 40 album. And in the end, somehow, this mix winds up being my favorite of the series. What can I say, I'm a big fan of the future.UPDATE: And now it's even more of a favorite - a better SFA track, Sage Francis' haunting 9/11 critique, Pink's Blondonna disco-pop, DMX's fatalistic soul, Jay-Z's izzo-ramic lyrical stylings and Vitalic's jackhammer house. Sadly, the circle is broken up since the first track of the '77 comp is no longer obvious Strokes influence Iggy Pop, but it's a small price, I guess.
Feedback:
(standing ovation continues for minutes....curtain calls expected!)
Best track on the Gorillaz album. Cheers!
It seems like this series started so long ago but it wasn't. Wow, has is been a great 25 years. I really cannot argue that I would change a thing about any of them. And I have to agree, the inclusion of "Que pasa contigo" as the song the represents the Gorillaz is fantastic! Thanks, Nate, for all the great memories!
nice ending to a great series.
very nice ending, very hollywood smiley happy nice comments. nice mix... i'm a fan of this one too. congrats on the whole series!!
incredible.
Great ending with The Strokes, kind of brings it all full cirlce.
Well, I started the whole shebang off with "Lust For Life", which seems to be the template for "Someday"... yeah, you've got a point there. (It was only partially intentional. ;) )
much better than the repackaged bilge issued by the Big Five. bravo for fusing the popular with the unusual. I think you walked the line between #1-hit obviousness and cult-status obscurity quite successfully. good show all the way through!
I am so glad to see Prefuse 73 on here, what a genius Scott Herron is... nice series, it really covers alot, and it is all over the place. Really great!
Just found out the Avalanches' "Since I Left You" was originally released in late 2000. But I'm leaving it on here because... uh... I feel like it?
i was feeling a bit cheeky and threw another daft punk track on my latest mix (a habit i've formed lately). so i did a search for df on people's mixes, this, i think, is the best i found. nice. and usually i'm not as liberal with complements.
