Comment:

a Xmas present for my 14yo cousin, she newly fallen into the "troubled youth and the wrong crowd in hicksville suburbia" category of society. My only working knowledge of her tastes were Ludacris, Missy E. and Limp Bizcuit, so I ran with the hip-hop/r&b and nu-metal/punk as best I could [holding true to the criteria of including songs I have strong affections for], countering some positive rebel messages (the point, as opposed to "break stuff") by making sure to include lots of gratuitous swearing (perhaps the selling point? would've delighted me at 14). Admittedly, forcing one's tastes (unheard of=uncool in high school) down the throat of an unsuspecting teenager is always a recipe for this becoming a piece of jewelry, but I'm happy with the effort.

Wow, Lakespeed. You ever consider a career move to become a guidance counselor? I think Nina Simone & X-Ray Spex are my fave stealth tracks here.

Very cool. Unfortunately, you are correct in assuming that anything unheard of=uncool, (to a high schooler), but there are some good tunes on here, so hopefully she'll realize that.

damn. some cousins get all the luck, you know? there's a ton of full-blown adults who could use a copy of this mix, if you ask me. i think you just might've tapped into a whole new area for humanitarian aid....

So your cousin doesn't like Def Leppard? Not enough gratuitous swearing? This looks good. I'd have no idea what to put on a mix for a 14-year-old. I'd just buy her some perfume and send her on her way.

i don't think she'd be ready for the subtle nuances that def leppard bring to the table...might cause a little hysteria or bring on the heartbreak, if you know what i mean.

i hate to admit it, but that ludacris song "roll out"... i have that downloaded. i love the part about "who's ya housekeeper? whatcha keep in yo' house? what about diamonds and gold? is that what you keep in yo' mouth." that just cracks me up. anyway... to restore some musical credibility to myself... i like the stuff on your mix, too. esp x-ray spex (which nearly started a riot on my school bus in the eleventh grade when i made the bus driver play a tape of it on the bus), pj harvey and kid 606.

I think rap gets written off too much nowadays. That means something coming from a punk/metal fan such as myself. Excellent Fugazi pick.
